Since 2008 I have had the great opportunity to work for Nike. As a Senior Footwear Designer and Design Director I have teamed up with some of the most creative and talented people around. Below is an insight into the process on some of the projects I have worked on.
NIKE LUNARTERRA ARKTOS SP / 2013 - The Nike LunarTerra Arktos takes on the Special Projects filter with added TPU toe and heel overlays form Goth-inspired diamonds. Combined with the monotone design, they communicate a connection to street culture while serving to further insulate and protect the foot from weather and wear. Previewed at the Spring 2014 Hood By Air NYFW Collection.
NIKE LUNARTERRA ARKTOS / 2013 - Delivering the lightweight comfort of a sneaker with the rugged, insulated protection of a boot, the Nike LunarTerra Arktos is a modular solution to harsh conditions. This is the new and improved cold weather system of dress.
NIKE SOLARSOFT RIPPLEBROOK / 2013 - The ultra lightweight Nike Solarsoft Ripplebrook takes the look of a classic duckboot and merges a technical waterproof injected Solarsoft foam midsole/toe protection with a leather upper that is stitched on. A sticky gum rubber sole for durability and traction and a medial zipper top the boot off.
NIKE SOLARSOFT MOCCASIN WOVEN / 2013 - The Nike Solarsoft Moccasin utilizes a woven treatment for breathability coupled with a dual density midsole for bare-footwear. Perfect to slip on and off for summer season.
NIKE LUNAR CHENCHUKKA / 2013 - The Nike Lunar Chenchukka is an everyday shoe with wearability at the forefront. Utilizing Dynamic Flywire, a lasered leather upper for breathability, and a Lunar Glide 4 midsole for maximum comfort.
NIKE OKWAHN II / 2012 - The Nike Okwahn II take some of the design lines from a previous ACG model of cult status the Okwahn and updates it on a new trail running midsole and durable outsole for traction. With reflective accents and a raised collar the The Nike Okwahn 2 is trail ready.
NIKE INNEVA WOVEN / 2012 - Had the pleasure of helping out with the Nike Free Inneva. Designed to mimic the natural biomechanics of the foot, the Nike Free Inneva Woven is defined by its premium crafted details: a hand-woven upper, dynamic lacing system and natural motion.
NIKE AIR APPROACH 2012 / 2012 - An update to the original Air Approach on a stitched down GM© cupsole midsole/outsole with visable cushioning. An added medial waterproof zipper creates an easy entry.
NIKE WMNS ASTORIA / 2012 - The Nike Wmns Astoria is a lightweight hiker, drawing inspiration from the Meriwether and utilizing the Nike Okwahn 2’s rugged rubber outsole. Built for the trail and built for her.
NIKE FREE POWERLINES + / 2012 - Named after a local run outside of the Nike Campus the Powerlines uses a minimal woven cage system for medial and lateral support. Minimal use of materials (a Fuse and Nylon webbing version) shape the design language and pairs nicely with the natural motion of the Free Run midsole.
NSW WMNS ALEXA / 2012 - Using a Dual Density midsole fromthe Nike Manor, the Alexa is a clean wearable silhouette utilizing lasered perforations for breathability and a three panel construction.
NIKE AIR YEEZY 2 / 2012 - A collaborative project that started when Kanye West was working on his, “My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy” album and wrapped up while he was working on “Watch The Throne” with Jay-Z. Forging a new form of sport craftsmanship, the Nike Air Yeezy II blends classic Nike court breakthroughs with performance and an obsessive approach to materials and detailing. Futuristic craft meets animalistic form.
NSW WOVEN MAYFLY / 2012 - A crafted woven interpretation of the classic Mayfly for the NSW Collection. The woven technique provides maximum breathability for the summer.
NIKE MANOR / 2012 - Weighing in at 10.8oz the Nike Manor is not your conventional vulcanized shoe. Using a a new Dual-Density midsole system for lightweight comfort and a rubber heel for durability. 5oz less then a standard Vulcanized Chukka but wearable for daily use.
NIKE FOOTSCAPE FREE / 2012 - Taking the natural motion and combining it with natural fit equals a lightweight comfortable product with reflective detailing and durable materials.
NIKE PRE-MONTREAL RACER / 2012 - The ultimate embodiment of Nike, Steve Prefontaine had a special make up running flat in preparation for going for gold in the 1976 Montreal Olympics. Bringing back the style on a road flat that Pre would of trained in prepping for games. Pre Lives.
NIKE ZOOM MERIWETHER / 2011 - Taking a traditional hiker boot and putting a Nike twist on it with a seam-sealed medial zipper for easy entry. Hardware, reflective laces, and a molded collar that wraps around the ankle. Not your dad’s hiking boots, unless you are a dad of course, with collabs with HF of Fragment and a Nike RED Version. Designed and Tested in Beaverton, Oregon U.S.A.
NIKE LUNAR FLOW / 2011 & 2012 - A modern interpretation of the Bruce Kilgore’s Air Flow from 1989 which was so ahead of its time. The Lunar Flow uses Fuse Technolgy to create a unibody system with structural and breathable zones while creating a lightweight seamless product. Sample weighing it at 7.7oz .
For the winterized version for Holiday 2011 the Lunar Flow goes to a micro-suede package with a micro-perfed vamp and quarter panels and molded details for a clean silhouette.
For the 2012 NSW Collection Spring version of the Lunar Flow an engineered laser perfed vamp and side panels were used to create flex and breathability.
For the Summer 2012 version the Lunar Flow goes to a woven pattern for enhanced breathability in the heat, taking influence from the Aina.
NIKE DRESS SHOE PACK / 2011 - A premium quickstrike execution of two past models the Aina and Hachi and also adding in the Toki to make a collection of wearbable product. Deconstruction the upper with leather lining and subtle branding and details.
NIKE AIR MOC 1.5 / 2011 - Taking the iconic Air Moc and making it easier to enter with a stretch mesh bootie and a elasticated cord for tightening. The ACG woven patch gives a shout to the Mowabb.
NIKE FOOTSCAPE WOVEN FREEMOTION CHUKKA / 2011 - The longest name around, the Woven Chukka takes all the great work from Mike Aveni and takes the collar to a chukka height with integrated stretch gussets for ease of entry and a free motion tooling for added comfort. The woven panels create maximum breathability. A great collaboration with Bodega, and the animal print version helped take this model to a new level.
NIKE ACG TALARIA BOOT / 2011 - An outdoor interpretation of the classic Talaria Running Shoe. Color and Materials and Design Details.
NIKE HACHI / 2011 - The Hachi takes design queues from the vintage runner Nike Sting and twists it on a Chukka platform. Hachi meaning bee in Japanese sits with the Toki and Aina and has a honeycomb toe bumper to further tell the story.
NIKE LUNAR ORBIT / 2011 - A new take on the entry system taking experience from 5 years of designing Wetsuits, the Lunar Orbit is engineered for function. An engineered top mesh to provide less surface contact on the foot, a medial support sleeve, reflective taping for visibility with Beaverton OR GPS coordinates on it, and a PU coated zipper inspired by the Nike Tech Pack.
NIKE FREE RUN + 2 CITY PACK/ 2011 - Color and Materials for the leading performance running shoe, taking it to a more wearable place with micro-suede, reflective laces, and a speckled grey midsole. Graphics tie into the City Destroyer Jackets by Stotty.
NIKE LUNAR MACLEAY / 2010 - A product that grew out of travels to Japan coupled with the the rugged outdoors of the Portland Area, the Nike Macleay is named after a trail in Forest Park. The durable minimal upper with medial and lateral supports, hardware eyelets, and reflective details help this rugged shoe be perfect for all conditions. The ‘Made For China’ colorway was done as the first launch, done with Shanghai native Runyo Chen giving love to his homeland.
NIKE LUNAR ELITE TRAIL MID / 2010 - A trail version of the Lunar Elite running shoe, with a higher collar to keep debris out of the shoe, perforated reflective details for visibility, and durable materials.
NIKE AINA / 2010 - A sophisticated shoe that is very wearable using woven details for improved breathability, Nike Blazer outsole for traction, and subtle branding.
NIKE LUNARWOOD / 2009 - A collaboration with Wood Wood, the Lunarwood is a great example of ACG, and based on the Wildwood. Using a nanotechnology water proof coating and the Lunar Glide tooling this shoe is uncompromised in comfort and protection.
